Hawk transferred to Okinawa City Zoo for rehabilitation

Date Posted: 2007-10-27

The Sashiba, a member of the hawk family, annually migrates to Miyako Jima City for a winter break from mainland Japan’s harsh weather.

One Sashiba is already in Okinawa, flying here not on her wings, but on the wings of a jetliner. The hawk was flown from Fukushima Prefecture to Okinawa City, where she is undergoing rehabilitation at the Okinawa City Zoo. The bird had been attacked by a crow when a chick last year, suffering injuries and almost dying. The hawk was found and nursed back to health by a veterinarian.

The bird is healthy, but now lacks survival skills. The Okinawa City Zoo will teach the hawk how to get bait, how to fly, and how to protect itself. “This hawk has been raised by humans, and he doesn’t know about a wild life at all,” says the veterinarian. “Because he was just a chick when found, he doesn’t know how to fly, or find live bait like grasshoppers and earthworms.”
