Army to host joint service 5k Red Ribbon fun run

Date Posted: 2007-10-27

Torii Beach is expected to draw hundreds Saturday as the US Army on Okinawa hosts a 5k fun run capping Red Ribbon Week.

The joint service fun run is open to all SOFA status US military members, Department of Defense civilians and family members. The fun run is intended to show solidarity in the fight against drug abuse, the whole focus of Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week was declared an island-wide special event during ceremonies last month.

Lieutenant General Richard C. Zilmer, in issuing a proclamation for Red Ribbon Week, said “We solve problems when we step in and break the chain, stopping substance abuse.” The III Marine Expeditionary Force commanding general said he “looks forward to bringing incident levels down to zero.”

The first 50 people signing up for Saturday morning’s fun run will receive “a take anywhere instant folding chair with carrier,” according to public affairs spokeswoman Dottie Vick. Registration information is available from Ms. Cynthia Hannah, DSN 644-4149, or Cynthia.Hannah@us.army.mil.
