Ryukyu Bus Company sues Prefecture, Naha City

Date Posted: 2007-10-25

Ryukyu Bus Company is proceeding with bankruptcy proceedings, while simultaneously filing lawsuits against Okinawa Prefecture and Naha City on charges the two entities failed to live up to agreements made in 2003.
Bus company officials contend both the Prefecture and Naha City agreed to provide Okinawa’s four bus companies with subsidies to offset anticipated lost revenues when the monorail system began operations. The agreement was reportedly covering a three-year period.
That money has never been forthcoming, bus company officials say. Instead of giving the subsidies, the company’s attorney says Naha City and Okinawa Prefecture kept the money to reimburse themselves for debts the bus company had incurred. The Prefecture and Naha City told the bus company they were using the subsidy money to pay back the debts, but the bus company attorney charges it’s not a legal option.
The bus company is demanding ¥100 million from the Prefecture and Naha City.
