Road improvement plans announced

Date Posted: 2002-08-15

Okinawa Prefecture Civil Engineering Department announced recently that the improvement and construction of Route 24 connecting the new Chatan Town Hall to Yamazato in Okinawa City would begin with the introduction of fiscal year 2003.

Plans for the new road were completed last year, and the project can be completed as Camp Lester will be returned to Japan.

Many residents in the area have complained for years about their narrow and twisting roads. The new 3.8 km long road will be relatively straight and have wide sidewalks with plants and trees as decorations.

Other improvement plans include widening the road connecting Urasoe City and Nishihara as the development of Nakagusuku Bay Marine Town area is expected to increase traffic considerably.

The Yonabaru intersection will be widened and Highway 329 leading to the intersection will be widened to 30 meters in order to alleviate perpetual traffic congestion in the area. This work is scheduled to be completed by the year 2008.
