Test subjects experience drunk driving perils

Date Posted: 2007-10-22

Concerned about dangers of drunk drivers, Yaeyama Police, the Yaeyama Traffic Safety Association and Ishigaki City Traffic Safety Promotion Committee staged a real life demonstration about how people change after drinking.
The groups conducted a lecture and demonstration at a Yaeyama driving school, giving participants a chance to consume alcohol to get drunk, and then drive in a special test area after being drunk. The bold move by authorities came in the aftermath of a July incident where a drunk driver ran over a man sleeping on the road.
On the test course, with an observer also in the car, drivers maneuvered, albeit not well. When finished, drivers were asked about their experience. In several cases, drunk drivers hit dolls placed on the test course, with one driver not even noticing he’d done it. In another test to demonstrate drunk drivers’ inability to drive straight, fake stone walls made of cardboard were placed along the course. Drivers struck the stone wall, much as they did hitting the dolls.
