Winds buffet Kadena paratrooper trainingDate Posted: 2007-10-22 Kadena Air Base’s 18th Wing staged the training jump for nine men, to demonstrate the air base a safe place for airborne training. Ie Island, a small island off Okinawa’s northwest coast, is the normal jump training site for U.S. Forces. Kadena wanted to show airborne training was safe on this main island, and more convenient for troops who didn’t have to take boats to Ie Island. Two jumpers veered off course thanks to 23mph (10mps) winds blowing across Kadena, sending the two into bushes, where they sustained light scratches. A Kadena Town Assemblyman, Toshiyuki Kinjo, observed the training. “We say one pilot landed in the bushes, and we worried about the wind blowing them into a local housing area.” A Chatan Town resident said “it was kind of windy, and we thought the man would land in the town, but he landed inside the base. It still was dangerous.” |
