Military truck driver involved in hit and run incident

Date Posted: 2003-08-22

An American military vehicle sideswiped a civilian vehicle near Naha in a hit-and-run incident over the weekend. A U.S. military truck traveling north on Highway 58 in Makiminato side clipped a car traveling to the same direction, and then drove away from the site of the accident. According to Urasoe Police, the military truck, one in a convoy of three, swerved to the right in order to avoid a car that was parked on the side of the street. The truck briefly struck a car traveling on the right lane and broke its side window.

Although the truck stopped briefly, it took off shortly. The female driver of the car was unhurt and reported the incident to the police. The driver, a 19-year-old marine stationed on Camp Hansen, later contacted the police and confessed to being the driver. Police say the marine said that he had gotten scared and left the scene after confirming that the woman in the car was not hurt. He also said that he wants to apologize for the incident.
