Water rugby a real sport for the strong hearted

Date Posted: 2007-10-18

Most people have never heard of water rock rugby, but it is real, and gaining in popularity.

The sport competition takes place underwater, and the ball is really a 30kg rock. The 5th All-Japan Water Rock Rugby Tournament in Tokashiki early next month will focus public attention on the sport. The tournament begins November 2nd.

The game is played with four-member teams, each trying to move the heavy rock underwater. Played without snorkels or scuba equipment, water rock rugby relies on endurance and strong breathing. Each team’s members take turns diving after the rock, trying to maneuver the stone better than their opponents.

“For me it is really an exciting game,” says player Natsuko Wada of Tokyo, “giving strength to change my own self limitations.” It takes real teamwork in water rock rugby, and Yoshiyuki Awa of the sponsoring Water Risk Management Association says players learn how to protect themselves, and “we want a lot of people tolearn about this game.”
