Japanese airlines announce fare hikes for student group travel

Date Posted: 2007-10-18

Okinawa tourism officials are fearful the Prefecture could lose 100,000 student tourists next year in the wake of fair increase announcements by both Japan Air Lines and All Nippon Airways.

The two airlines say fares will go up in 2008, and again in 2009, for student group tours from Tokyo and Osaka schools. Student ticket prices will increase ¥1,300 for a one-way ticket, and ¥2,600 for a round trip ticket. JAL and ANA have apologized for the price hikes, citing higher fuel costs.

Okinawa tourism officials are crying discrimination, noting both airlines have announced student fare reductions on Tokyo ~ Kagoshima and Osaka ~ Kagoshima routes. “Okinawa is a special area where travel is pretty much restricted to airlines,” tourism officials say, “whereas mainland cities are served by trains and buses.”

Okinawa officials are calling upon ANA and JAL to reevaluate their fare hike positions. Tourism officials are asking the two airlines to understand the island’s unique circumstances, and make more reasonable prices instead of upping the fares.
