Ginowan cops bust juvenile girls for drinking

Date Posted: 2007-10-15

It was an ordinary school day, and the young girls were hanging around a Ginowan City Park drinking and having fun.
The girls, ages 14 and 15, were drinking alcohol and getting drunk, prompting a bystander to call police. The 14 girls had gone to the park after school, taking large 1.8 liter bottles of beer from their homes with them. Police took all the girls into custody.
Okinawa Prefecture Police say the number of juvenile drinking arrests is increasing, noting that it’s often large groups rather than small, isolated numbers of kids. A member of Okinawa Prefecture Assembly’s eduction section says “Right now it’s a very serious problem.”
He says “adults should be showing children how to straighten up their lives and teach what is good, and what is bad.” The Prefecture Police youth section says it believes the teenagers are simply trying to copy what adults are drinking.
