95-years of emigration to Argentine celebrated

Date Posted: 2003-08-22

A 180-strong delegation lead by Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine and Okinawa City Mayor Masakazu Nakasone, attended a ceremony in Buenos Aires commemorating the 95th anniversary of the start of Okinawan emigration to Argentine.

At the ceremony, the governor gave a speech in which he praised the efforts of the Okinawans in settling to the new country. The life must have been hard for those first emigrants who arrived at Argentine 95 years ago. They came here to start a new life in totally new surroundings. They confronted unfamiliar weather, customs, foreign language and different food. They needed to be strong to survive, but because they were strong their life here has turned better for them and for the rest of the Argentineans. Im so proud of our ancestors, and congratulate everyone for what they have done, Inamine said.
