Mihama announces Halloween costume contestDate Posted: 2007-10-22 The Halloween Festival takes place Wednesday, October 31st, at Performance Square adjacent to the ferris wheel in American Village. Halloween, celebrated primarily as an American tradition, is attracting interest in Okinawa, and Mihama American Village merchants intend to add their own touch to festivities. The costume contest is being staged, says the chairman of Chatan Mihama American Village Merchant Association, “to bring the international and military communities together with Okinawans in a reverse-cultural event.” Teruo Okuhara says prizes will be awarded to the Best 10 entrants, with 1st place prize $300, 2nd place $200 and 3rd place $100. Fourth through tenth finishers will receive merchandise from American Village merchants. Registration, which is free, runs 3 ~ 6 p.m., followed by the costume contest itself. The awards ceremony is set for 7 ~ 7:30 p.m. Okuhara says the schedule’s been fixed to accommodate military families, who will be able to still go trick-or-treating on bases following the contest. The contest is open to kids of all ages. |
