Police nap an elusive thief near Cape Zampa beach

Date Posted: 2007-10-12

For months, Yoshinari Sokei had preyed on tourists swimming at beaches, breaking into their rental cars and stealing their valuables while the frolicked in the Okinawa sun.

The Oroku area man was caught last month while breaking into a car at Yomitan Village’s Cape Zampa beach. He was in the process of pilfering a car broken into using a special tool. Numerous reports of the beach parking lot thief ripping of expensive watches, digital cameras, diamond rings and other jewelry, and cash led police to watch rental cars at beaches more closely.

It worked, and the 49-year-old thief was caught red handed trying to steal a purse containing ¥280,000. Sokei admitted the thefts, telling police “I need to do it for my life.” He explained the thefts were very simple because “I have a special tool to open the keys to cars. Any type.” He also confessed to taking cash cards from the rental cars, going to the banks, and getting money.

Police raided Sokei’s home, where they found many items listed by victims as having been stolen.
