Southern islands take super typhoon hit

Date Posted: 2007-10-09

Super Typhoon Krosa is barely a tropical storm now, hours after dealing damaging blows to Taiwan and Okinawa’s Ishigaki and Yonaguni Islands.
Four injuries were reported Monday in the storm’s aftermath, but none serious. More than 7,500 families are without power as Super Typhoon Krosa tore down power poles and lines. A broken cable has stripped 800 families of telephone service, and airline service was suspended. More than 130 Yonaguni residents were stranded in Taiwan after they visited for a sister city friendship exchange celebration.
Winds on Yonaguni Island were recorded at 63.8m/s (142mph) as the typhoon passed to the south, nearer to Taiwan.
On Yonaguni Island, stranded tourists remained in hotels, unable to even call home to tell of their plight. On Ishigaki Island, 467ml (46.7cm/18.4”) of rain fell in a single hour. A large resort hotel lost power Sunday, and supermarkets were closed. Agriculture was severely impacted, with fruits, vegetables and plastic green houses blown away by the gusting winds.
