Bread, soba prices rise due to flour cost hikesDate Posted: 2007-10-05 Okinawa Flour Milling Company in Naha City announced a 6~8% price hike, attributing the increase to imported flour costs going up 10%. “It’s already past our price limit,” the flour company said. “We have to increase bread cost, and Okinawa soba will go up more than now.” He blamed American farmers for cutting their wheat production in favor of more corn and soybeans used in producing bio-fuels. Rising transportation costs, plus a stronger demand for grains and flour in China and India, were also cited as reasons for prices going up. The flour manufacturer says breads, all kinds of noodles, cookies and sweets will see retail price increases starting in November. Restaurants are expected to boost their prices to cover added costs. |
