Argentine tango star scheduled to tour Okinawa

A noted tango singer from Argentina, Suzaana Glasherra, is scheduled to tour Okinawa starting Aug. 31. Her tour includes concerts in 18 different locations throughout the prefecture, and will comprise of an entourage of 14 dancers and orchestra members.

According to her promoters, the singer will stay in Okinawa after competing her tour to produce a new CD with an Okinawan theme. “I would like to use Okinawan artists, recording studio and engineer to make my CD,” she said in an interview.

Her concert tour is promoted by Tadayuki Uchima, who says that it has been his lifelong dream to bring the real Argentinean tango to people of Okinawa. “This is something I wanted to do for a long time,” Uchima says.

Uchima who was born in Ie Island, emigrated with his parents to Bolivia in 1961, and moved on to Argentina in 1972. After he graduated from the University of Buenos Aires he came back to Japan to work for Fujitsu Corp. Later he moved back to Argentina and established his own entertainment production company.

Suzaana Glasherra was born in 1953, and is one of the best-known tango singers in her country. She has toured the world, including Tokyo and other cities of Japan, but this marks the first time she stays in this country for a longer period of time.
