Two drown in weekend incidents

Date Posted: 2007-09-24

A youngster who apparently fell into the Kokuba River in Naha City’s downtown area drowned Sunday afternoon, despite efforts of rescuers.
A patient in a Madanbashi area hospital saw the boy floundering in the river, which runs alongside the hospital, about 2:50 p.m. He called police, telling them the six-year-old boy was floating in the water, not swimming. Rescuers were quickly on the scene, but not fast enough to save the boy from drowning. The child was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
Police investigators say the boy was playing along near the riverbank, and somehow fell into the river. The boy’s name was not released.
A second drowning accident claimed one life Sunday in Taketoni Town.
