Election battle looms in Naha ChamberDate Posted: 2007-09-24 Terms expire October 31st for current officers and members of the board of directors, but delays now threaten to move a new election to after November 21st. A total of 130 officers and directors must be elected or reelected, and members are now asking questions and demanding answers as to how those nominees are to be selected. The Naha Chamber of Commerce and Industry staff is now researching challenges to members being qualified to run for office, a time consuming process. Officials say many basic standards thought to have been defined by regulations or policies appear to have been opinions and judgments on the part of officers, directors and staff. A business meeting is set for Thursday, but executive members are demanding a general meeting be called that same day. Some members are complaining about the agenda, and others are demanding investigations be undertaken on both elected officials and the election process itself. Observers predict the battle between various Chamber factions could force a rigid examination of every member and his or her qualifications, a process that could trigger further election delays. |
