Multiple beach cleanup projects set for Fall

Date Posted: 2007-09-21

With the summer tourist season slowing, environmental groups are cranking up their annual projects to rejuvenate and clean Okinawa’s beaches.

The International Coastal Cleanup will extend through September and October, linking the “My Beach” Project Adopt-a-Beach Program, Okinawa Cleanup YUIMARU-ICC, the Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability Convention, NPO Okinawa OCEAN and Au Okinawa Cellular.

The YUIMARU-ICC program is under way and runs through Octoaber 31st, with the third weekend in September earmarked for several beach cleanups. Kadena Marina is joining the program, and is already advertising its campaign on the American Forces Network.

The Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability Convention runs September 21st and 22nd in Okinawa. The LOHAS Convention is expecting more than 15,000 people to participate in the weekend event, and organizers say all booths have already been filled. NPO Okinawa’s O.C.E.A.N. is serving on the organizing committee, and will be promoting the My Beach Project during the convention.

Au Cellular Okinawa celebrates its 20th Anniversary October 20th by participating in sponsoring the environmental website used by Okinawa Cleanup, YUIMARU International Coastal Cleanup and My Beach Project. Au staff will lead ten cleanups around the island on October 20th to commemorate the anniversary. Okinawa O.C.E.A.N. is working with Au on the project.
