Goats milk touted as a healthy alternative

Date Posted: 2007-09-21

Goat farmers are waging a consumer promotion campaign extolling the virtues of goat milk over milk from cows.

The Ryukyu University Agriculture Department has teamed with the farmers, focusing attention on goat milk being superior to cow’s milk, particularly for people with allergies. The university’s research group drew plenty of attention at the Tokyo Industrial Matching Events, extolling the virtues of goat meat and goat milk as healthier than cow’s milk, even for beauty reasons.

The university, which has teamed with the Agricultural Production Fund, Hagoromo Ranch in Nakagusuku Village, says it’s selling not only goat’s milk to local hotels, but cheese, too. The researchers point out there are no allergy by products in goats milk, and it contains less milk sugar than in cow’s milk. They say it is good for cats, dogs and other pets.

Another benefit of goat milk, the university specialists and farmers say, is that it burns calories in the body at a higher rate, and offers protection against cancer. The team plans to promote Okinawa goat milk and meat nationwide, in hopes of making it a dominant agricultural industry.
