Tomishiro 2nd fastest growing city in Japan

Date Posted: 2007-09-21

Tomishiro City, riding a wave of new development bringing new residents and businesses to south central Okinawa, is now second to only Kameyama City in Mie Prefecture in Japan’s race to be the best developing city.

A Sharp electronics factory in Kameyama is driving growth in Mie Prefecture, while the Toyasaki Shopping Mall and other Toyoma Town Shopping Center businesses that opened last year are behind Tomishiro City’s growth. Homei Kinjo, the Tomishiro may, is elated. “I’m so happy to hear this news that Tomishiro City is growing every year,” he said. “We’re developing fast and will be growing endlessly.”

There are 782 Japanese cities measured in the development ranking, with growth power calculated based on population, numbers of businesses and workers, and a consumption index. There are 11 items on the survey checklist. Tomishiro City saw its wholesale business sales, new housing construction starts and the total number of retail businesses all on the increase.

The survey also measures how comfortable a city is, how firm the city’s financial situation is, how the city treats the environment, and how much emphasis is placed on parks and amusement areas for citizens. Tomishiro City ranks second in all categories.

Itoman City, Ishigaki City, Nago City, Okinawa City and Urasoe City are also ranked in the Top 200 Cities in Japan.
