Tire locks to go on tax deadbeats’ cars

Date Posted: 2007-09-21

Okinawans who fail to pay their taxes are finding themselves unable to drive their cars.

Okinawa Prefecture stepped up its campaign September 1st to put locks on car tires, so drivers can’t drive the vehicles. The Prefecture is going after people who haven’t paid taxes due in May, saying some people don’t even pay car taxes at all.

The government began locking tires last year, saying 33 cases brought in ¥3,630,000 in owed taxes. A Prefecture tax official says “we know locking the car tires are effective, and we also know it is not the best way to collect taxes.” He says, though, that “It works, and it’s not easy to collect taxes” any other way.
