Parties begin planning for 2008 Assembly elections

Prefecture Assembly elections arenít until next June, but politicians are already sizing up the issues and beginning strategy planning.

Uncertainty at the central government level, with the resignation of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, has left Liberal Democracy Party candidates waiting to see who wins the post and how the new leader will interface with the opposition parties. The Communist Party on Okinawa is forging forward, already identifying four candidates to run for Prefecture Assembly positions.

The upcoming elections will be a first for many on Okinawa. Community mergers and realignments will bring first-ever elections, and each party is studying how to win those Assembly seats.
