Weekend Kinserfest beckons all on island

Jazz, hip-hop and soul are but three of the “must visit” reasons for joining the fun at the annual Kinser Festival Saturday and Sunday.

Camp Kinser opens its gates to the military and civilian communities Saturday 3 pm to 10 pm, and on Sunday 1 pm to 10 pm, showcasing Marine Corps hospitality with music and other free entertainment, game booths, Kiddie Land, and a myriad of cultural food booths. Add pizza to the foods list and there’s a gastronomic experience for everyone.

Armed Forces Entertainment brings the hip-hop sound of Independent Music World Series winner, The Urban Sophisticates to the stage, along with Stanley Baird and his jazzy saxophone, and the soulful, earthy vocals of Marc Broussard. The funky soul band, Zapp, will also be on hand, providing what it calls “more bounce to the ounce.”

The Kinser Festival Open Softball Tournament starts on Friday at Camp Kinser Softball Field #4, then play continues through the weekend. Team and individual awards will be given to first, second and third place teams.

Sports lovers also have a chance to watch―or participate in―the Open Bench Press Competition on Sunday. Late registrations are permitted at the Kinser Fitness Center.

As with all MCCS festivals, visitors have a shot at winning giveaways and prizes offered by sponsors. One festival-goer will ride home on a brand new 2007 XL883 Harley-Davidson Sportster, courtesy of Harley-Davidson and AAFES New Car Sales. The prizes comes by way of a ‘Deal or No Deal’ style competition. A few other lucky guest will win such things as round trip tickets to one of five United Air Lines destinations, or a seating upgrade on United flights departing from Japan. The tickets are courtesy of United Air Lines and Omega World Travel.

Kids aren’t left out in the prize games, either. They get chances to win at the Mattel Kiddie Pool O’Prizes, where thousands of dollars of Mattel toys will be given away.

Kinser Festival entrance is by several gates to Camp Kinser. For sporting events, spectators are to use the back gate Gate #4. All other traffic will enter near Gate #2 near the Hotel King, and Gate #3, next to Pizza House.

Organizers remind those attending the festival there will a requirement to show Photo ID at the gate before entering.

In the event of a typhoon canceling Kinser Festival this weekend, the festivities will be staged next weekend, Saturday and Sunday, September 29th and 30th.
