Two drown, two injured in water accidents

Date Posted: 2007-09-18

A teenager and his would-be rescuer both drowned in waters off Urasoe City as high waves spawned by Typhoon Nari swept them away from a seawall.
The boy was one of three high school students who had gone swimming off Inase Seaside despite high sea warnings posted by the 11th Maritime Safety Agency that the area wasn’t safe. High waves swept the three from a breakwater wall, but two regained a handhold and were safe.
The third, an 18-year-old, was swept away. Three men who witnessed the incident immediately jumped into the water to rescue the boy, but the waves were too high, forcing two of them back. The third man drowned as his searched for the boy. Witnesses summoned the 11th Maritime Safety Agency, which rescued the two boys and two adults who tried to accomplish the rescue.
The high school student and his rescuer were both recovered by safety agency personnel and taken to a hospital, where both were pronounced dead on arrival. Initial medical reports listed cause of deaths as cardiac arrest. The dead adult is listed as a 30-year-old government official.
An incident in Chatan, also near breakwaters, left a man slightly injured. Another incident, this one in Itoman City, has a six-year-old boy unconscious in a local hospital. The boy, one of five youngsters who were fishing at a river, is still unconscious after falling from the river bank.
