Birthday pool party takes a new twist

Date Posted: 2007-09-13

Yana Clarke had a birthday party on Labor Day at the Camp Foster swimming pool.

The nine-year-old didnít want it to be a simple party, but instead asked her friends to make it very special. Instead of traditional gifts a young girl would want and expect, Yana wanted dog food, leashes, cat toys and collars. Her friends obliged, flooding the party with gifts to be donated to the Okinawa American Animal Rescue Society.

The OAARS volunteers, excited at the childís sense of giving, turned up at the party with puppies for Yana and her guests to play with. Hugs and cuddles were abundant through the afternoon, and OAARS officials praised Yana for her thoughtfulness and generosity.

OAARS operates locally, dealing with abandoned pets. The animal protection group notes Okinawa has one tenth the number of homeless animals that heavily populated Tokyo does, and that Okinawa puts to sleep triple the number of animals that Tokyo does.
