Girl drowns in Nago while rescuing another child

Date Posted: 2002-08-15

A family outing ended in tragedy when the eldest of five children drowned after managing to rescue a younger child who had sunken under water in Genga River in Nago City, Sunday.

According to Nago Police the five children had gone to the river to swim with one adult who was supposed to watch for their safety. While the children played in shallow water the adult had wandered into a nearby forest. Suddenly, 11-year-old Ayaka Hasegawa noticed that her 9-year-old cousin had trouble and had started to sink under water. Ayaka who was a good swimmer managed to grab the 9-year-old girl and carried her to the riverbank.

However, the task had exhausted her and she slipped back into the water and went under water. Other children who were all younger than her watched without knowing what to do, until one of the children went to look for the adult man who had accompanied them. He managed to locate Ayaka on the bottom of the river in two meters of water, and took her to a hospital, but attempts to resuscitate her failed and she was declared dead.

The police say that the river in most places is very shallow, only about 40 cm deep, but there’s only one place that the river is as deep as two meters. It is a very popular location with many families gathering there on weekends.
