Irate landowner blocks public roadway

Date Posted: 2007-09-12

A Naha City man who barricaded a road with concrete blocks after failing in a claim to get what he considered fair compensation for it, has lost his bid but not the blocks.
The man says his land was taken from him after World War II, and contends the government should have made a contract with him before building a road across it. The government says it did negotiate a deal, but that the land owner didnít agree with Naha Cityís offer.
ďNo, the price was too low. I want more money,Ē he told Naha City repeatedly through the years. Finally giving up, the man first began posting notices on the street using colored spray paints. The messages said it was private land. Donít use this road. Donít pass without permission from the landowner. When that failed, he put concrete blocks in the street to block vehicles from using it.
Area residents fed up with the situation finally asked for police intervention Tuesday. After a noisy confrontation, the man removed his concrete blocks from the roadway, allowing cars to once more pass.
