Man arrested for befriending, bilking junior high students

Date Posted: 2007-09-12

A 31-year-old northern Okinawa man is in jail, charged with extorting ¥113,000 from a group of junior high school students.
Police investigators say the man befriended two young teens he met on the street, then took advantage of them after learning the boys had money in savings accounts. The unemployed man asked the boys “Can you help me? I need money and would like to borrow some from you.” After receiving promises the money would be returned, the boys gave him their pocket money.
One boy gave his bank book to the con man, who went to the bank and withdrew the boy’s money. The other boy gave the extortionist cash. The boys, after finally giving up on the man’s returning their money, told parents and a school teacher. Police made an immediate apprehension, and are now checking if the man has a criminal record.
