Rain, rain… not going away

Date Posted: 2007-09-12

It’s not the rainy season, but Okinawa residents would be hard pressed to believe it.
A tropical depression lingering over Okinawa has kept the rain falling through the weekend. In Nanjo City’s Itokazu area, it was more than simple rain, as 93mm per hour fell in the heaviest spurts. The 24-hour total was 267mm. Naha City’s rain gauges registered 187.5mm during the same period Sunday.
The cloudbursts triggered landslides in both Itoman and Nanjo Cities, with flooding also reported in both communities. Ten homes flooded in Nanjo City, while rising waters sent dozens scurrying to an evacuation center in Itoman City Civil Hall. Other landslides were reported in Yonabaru Town, including an area of the Yonabaru Central Hospital front side. No injuries were reported.
An accident did occur Sunday at Uruma City’s Gushikawa Athletic Park, where a protective wall at the multi-purpose facility gave way, allowing water mixed with red clay soil to flood over a roadway. One lane of the road was closed while cleanup crews cleared the area.
