Nago City gives Defense Minister chilly reception

Date Posted: 2007-09-10

Nago City’s mayor greeted Japan’s new Defense Minister Saturday, but the reception was anything but cordial.
Masahiko Komura visited the northern Okinawa city to discuss plans for relocating Futenma Marine Corps Air Station from Ginowan, but found little support from Mayor Yoshikazu Shimabukuro. The mayor stood firm on his demand that “the runway be built offshore to prevent noise from the base from affecting our local residents’ daily lives.”
A plan set last year between Japan and the United States called for building a new airfield with a pair of V-shaped runways on Camp Schwab. Neither the Okinawa Prefecture government nor Nago City want that, instead asking the plan be redrawn to move the runways offshore.
