Recycle list expands to flat screen TVís, dryers

Date Posted: 2007-09-07

The Environment Ministry, hammered with demands to curb the illegal dumping of broken and obsolete appliances, has expanded the list of products manufacturers will be responsible for accepting for recycle.

Liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma televisions top the new listing, along with clothes dryers. A recommendation microwave ovens be added was rejected, with an explanation newer microwaves are smaller and lighter, and their disposal can be handled by local municipalities. Current laws will be modified to include the new products.

The Environment Ministry has worked closely with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to expand the recycle list. It now requires a fee be paid for disposing of standard televisions, as well as for washing machines, refrigerators and standard tube-type televisions.
