Okinawa electricity costs to drop in second quarter
Date Posted: 2002-01-31
The price of electrical power will drop in Okinawa from April through June due to falling oil prices, announced the Okinawa Electric Power Company on Jan. 24. The cost of electricity will be reduced to ¥116 per 300 kWh, the largest reduction among the 10 electric utilities in Japan. Dipping oil prices along with the dropping cost of coal and the flagging yen in the last quarter of 2001 depressed the estimated average fuel rate to ¥11.1 thousand per kiloliter for the April-June period, down from the January-March price of ¥12.5 thousand. Okinawa saw the biggest drop in electrical prices because all of the island’s power is generated exclusively from oil and coal.
