Car dealership jumps into hotel business

Date Posted: 2007-08-24

An Okinawa car sales company is ready to step into a new industry, announcing plans to build a resort hotel on Yonaguni.
Ryukyu Nissan Cars Co. will open a new 78-room Island Resort Yonaguni next year. Sojin Nakaima, the auto outfit’s president, says the 9,800 square meters hotel complex will have a spa, a pool and restaurants. Nakaima says it’s the first time his company has ventured out of the automotive business and into hotels.
Construction begins soon, with a pre-opening in February 2008 and the grand opening later in the year. Rooms will go for ¥20,000-30,000 per night. Nakaima says the resort hotel will be eco-friendly, incorporating recycling into everyday operations.
Local farmers will have contracts to provide fresh fruits and vegetables, and Nakaima says there’s more. He plans to give tourists a firsthand insight into farming, with the local farmers teaching how the fresh produce and fruits are grown and harvested.
Yonaguni Island, which has extended its airport runway 2,000 meters to accommodate jet aircraft, fully supports the development. Yonaguni, Okinawa’s southern-most island, is already a divers’ tourism destination. Only 38,000 tourists visited in 2004, but the number jumped to 47,000 in 2005. Tourism officials predict that number will increase again when 2006 figures are announced.
