Okinawa Police keeps watchful eye on traffic

Date Posted: 2002-08-08

Okinawa police have a new weapon in its arsenal for combating traffic law violators, specifically those speeding. Currently, the police have automatic speed control cameras at 13 different locations. This so called N-system consists of a radar, camera, strobe, projector and picture sensors, and it is capable of reading the car’s license number. Besides keeping an eye on speeders, the police use the system for locating stolen and other vehicles on the police’s wanted list.

Naturally, the police are reluctant to disclose the locations of their sensors. “We don’t want to say where we have these devices. If everyone knew their location, they would not have any effect,” an Okinawa Prefectural Police spokesman said. He added that the best bet for drivers is to drive safely and follow all traffic rules.
