Defense Minister, Nago mayor avoid Henoko topicDate Posted: 2007-08-17 Mayor Yoshikazu Shimabukuro says he met with Yuriko Koike while she visited Okinawa, but “I only met with her five minutes, and it went quickly. We only talked about Kariyushi wear, and how it should be promoted nationwide and to the world.” He credited the Defense Minister with using her influence to increase popularity of the native Okinawa clothing lines. The mayor and Koike had been scheduled to have a luncheon meeting, but it was cancelled unexpectedly. She told reporters she was only in Okinawa “to promote Kariyushi wear, not for other purposes.” Still, she told reporters there was no point in meeting each other, since they didn’t hold the same opinion right now. Nago City and the Prefecture have refused to accept an assessment letter outlining plans for the new military airfield at Henoko, a letter Koike submitted more than a week ago. Koike has warned Okinawa she’ll cut or suspend ¥10 billion in subsidies allocated for the prefecture if it doesn’t respond to her document. |
