Irate citizen ready to take Ishigaki mayor to court

Date Posted: 2007-08-16

An Ishigaki resident charges the Ishigaki City mayor and his administration improperly sold city land at a cheap price, and claims it has "given me property damage."

The man says he's taking the mayor to court, seeking legal claims for damage. At issue is a sale of 3,157 square meters of city land to a real estate developer, a transaction he charges was done at less than market value. He claims the sale was nearly 17% less than it should have been, and says that affects him. “It was city property,” he maintains, and it should have been sold at a proper value.

“The land is located along the state road, and if the city wanted to sell the land,” he says, “it should have gone out for bid competition, but the city didn’t take any action on bidding.” The city said it had no comment yet, but would do so soon.
