Date Posted: 2002-08-08

A fire broke out in broad daylight in Kainan, Naha City. The fire completely destroyed two houses and damaged a third. No on was injured. 15 fire engines and 57 firemen were at the scene to snuff out the flames. Naha Police and fire department are investigating the cause.

Investigators say that according to local residents one of the houses had been empty for some time, and had become a favorite spot for local young boys to loiter and smoke cigarettes. The residents had complained about the situation as they considered it a fire hazard. The area is very tightly built and most of the houses have wooden structures.

A woman living in the neighborhood was the first to notice the fire and called police. “The flames were already very high when I saw it and called the police. It was a big surprise to me that the house caught fire in the middle of the day,” she said.

The fire crews were not able to save the two houses but managed to contain the fire and protect other houses in the vicinity of the fire. One other building was slightly damaged, mostly by smoke.
