Villages upset over planned JSDF-American joint training

Date Posted: 2007-08-09

The Japanese Ground Self Defense Agency will begin joint training activities with the Marine Corps at Camp Hansen, and nearby villages aren't pleased with the prospects.

The first JGSDF units will undergo training in the near future, using both the base and the central training area range. Atsushi Watabe and Tsutomu Satou, both of the Self Defense Agency, have met with Kin Town, Onna Village and Ginoza Village officials to explain the exercise program, as outlined Japan-U.S. reorganization paperwork.

The three municipalities are opposed to the joint training. Onna Village Assemlby members say it will be a big burden on local residents, increasing noise, odors, potential fire damage and accidents, and disrupting fishing. None of the three have given their approval.
