OIWC makes plans for annual newcomer tea

Date Posted: 2007-08-09

The 53-year-old Okinawa International Women's Club is preparing to welcome new members at an August 29th event.

The OIWC, a non-profit group created to build stronger relationships between local citizens and foreign wives on Okinawa, is hosting a Welcome Tea at the Butler Officers Club at 11 am August 29th. The OIWC says the tea is open to all women with SOFA status who live on Okinawa.

Formed in 1953 by the wife of the Chief Executive of the Ryukyu Islands, Mrs. Higa, the OIWC meets regularly to exchange cultural customs, holiday traditions, hobbies and daily rituals. OIWC spokesperson Loretta E. Robertson says monthly events hosted by OIWC include luncheons, cultural events, bazaars, cooking classes and community service projects.

Luncheons are held the first Monday of each month at various restaurants and cultural centers across the island, sharing friendship and culture while enjoying varied cuisines and entertainment from Japanese and foreign dancers, singers and musicians. The luncheons are $20 for on-base events, and 2,800 for those held off base. It sponsors annual Christmas and Spring bazaars to raise money for local charities both on base and in the local community. OIWC also has smaller cultural groups that meet to accommodate member needs.

Information on the OIWC is available from Ms. Robertson, 6117-323272, or by visiting the OIWC website, http://www.freewebs.com/oiwc/.
