Haebaru Town celebrates new community facility

Date Posted: 2007-08-02

A new environmentally friendly community center has opened in Haebaru Town, amidst praise from local residents.

The Environment Forest Reach Center in Haebaru’s Arakawa area as a gift from government agencies in appreciation for citizens accepting a waste treatment facility in the local community. Haebaru Town is home to the new facility, opened last year. The ¥1.2 billion garbage treatment plant services both Naha City and Haebaru Town.

Residents had long opposed construction of the waste facility in Haebaru Town, but ultimately agreed after the central government and Naha City said they’d foot the bulk of the bill. “Until now we had been giving trouble (to the government) for the garbage treatment facility,” says Haebaru Town mayor Toshiyasu Shiroma, “but now, this Environment Forest Reach Center will make a new town life for us.”

The community center includes a restaurant, sauna and baths, meeting and study rooms, and a sports center. The center is well landscaped, and includes greenery, a playground and open spaces. Future plans call for planting trees to create a forest for residents’ healthy life and enjoyment.
