U-Tan's is sports paradise

Date Posted: 2007-08-02

An avid sports fan living in Okinawa often finds himself challenged to witness his favorite team’s endeavors.

What many Americans miss in the otherwise multifaceted bar and restaurant scene in Okinawa is a real sports bar where, after a hard day's work, one can watch his or her favorite sports event while relaxing with a cool one in hand and discussing daily topics with friends.

Worry no more, because U-Tan’s Sports Café close to KAB gate 2 is just such a place. Opened on May 16, it has everything you would expect from a sports bar, including a 130-inch big screen high definition TV, and four HDTV monitors for patrons to track the numerous sports being brought in via satellite.

The selection includes UFC, Pride, K-1, NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, soccer and X-sports. U-Tan’s proclaims itself ‘full service’ in everything, meaning you can even ask the bar to record your favorite games to enjoy again later.

The café has a bar counter, and a few tables to sit. It is small enough to allow patrons to engage in friendly conversations in almost family-like atmosphere. There are also two darts machines in the back that cost \100 per game, where you can always challenge U-tan himself. But be warned, he’s a pretty good shooter.

The specials include the daily four-hour Drink Special from 7 to 11 p.m. with men paying $29, and ladies $24. Wednesday is the Ladies’ Night when mixed drinks cost $2 and beer $3 for ladies only.
The popular proprietor who goes by name “U-tan” says that he wanted to create “a cozy and exciting place for all of my friends, both American and Japanese.”

And he has succeeded indeed. An American customer, who said that he had just returned from Iraq, said that he was pleasantly surprised. “This is my first visit here。A friend of mine recommended the place, and this is just what my body and mind wants in order to relax after a busy day.”

Both yen and dollars are accepted at U-Tan’s, as are major credit cards. Parking is free, and the staff speaks English. U-Tan’s operates from 6 p.m. to midnigh. daily except on Tuesdays, when the place is closed.

U-tan’s is located just outside Kadena AB Gate 2, on the third floor of the building adjoining to the building housing Altec liquor store and Big Bull family restaurant.
