School worker steals kids’ lunch money

Date Posted: 2007-08-01

A part-time worker with the Naha City Board of Education stands charged with embezzlement after being caught stealing more than ¥2,117,200 ($18,095).

The 40-year-old employee is accused of stealing children’s school lunch money as she was taking it to the bank for deposit. Officials say the woman had been pocketing the money repeatedly from June 2006 through June 2007. She reportedly took the money every month while making the deposits.

A school principal first became suspicious after comparing school lunch program receipts and questioning variances between them and his school’s records. Discovering wrong totals, he notified the Board of Education, which confronted the woman. She admitted “I took” the money, and has been given a disciplinary dismissal effective July 27th.
