Date Posted: 2003-08-15

A Panama-registered cargo ship “Woody Ace” crashed into a small fishing boat returning home from a fishing venture and sank it. The Monday accident happened in broad daylight about 20 kilometers east of Katsuren Peninsula.

According to officials at the 11th Maritime Safety Agency, the 8.5-ton fishing boat registered with Kin Town Fishermen’s Association, had stopped fishing and started on its way back to the homeport.

The captain of the fishing boat, who was onboard alone, told investigators that he suddenly felt something crashing into his boat and he was thrown overboard. The boat sank almost immediately and another nearby fishing boat rescued the captain. The captain suffered no injury in the accident. Investigators from the 11th MSA are continuing their investigation into the accident.
