Two elderly men drown in separate incidents

Date Posted: 2007-07-30

Northern Okinawa beaches proved deadly for two visiting tourists over the weekend.

A 75-year-old visitor from Saitama Prefecture drowned at Motobu Town’s Emerald Beach Saturday. A lifeguard found Sadasaku Kobayashi’s lifeless body slumped over in the one-meter-deep water only 20 meters from shore. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Motobu police said it appeared he suffered an acute attack, perhaps a heart attack or a stroke.

A Kanagawa Prefecture tourist died in another water incident Saturday, at a Zamami Village beach. Officials say the 60-year-old man was snorkeling while he wife waited on shore. When her husband didn’t return after one-half hour, the wife began searching.

She found him, and he was transported to a hospital by helicopter. The man, who had been vacationing with his wife and brother, died Sunday at the hospital.
