Air Dolphin expands Okinawa flight schedules

Date Posted: 2007-07-30

An Air Dolphin Company air cargo plane is flying a round trip between Naha and Ishigaki today.

Company president Tatsuyu Sammatsu says the special cargo flight is making a once a day round trip to test the market for moving fresh fruits and produce between the southern islands and Okinawa’s capital. He called the flight ‘a first’ for a small cargo aircraft, but says there are a lot of products—mango, pineapples, vegetables and flowers—that warrant special transportation. He says annual sales are expected to top ¥70 million.

“The islands’ distribution circumstances are difficult,” Tatsuyu says, “because there’s not enough passenger traffic to justify aircraft. Isolated island have all kinds of agricultural products, and now I want to carry these fresh products to the mainland, or to Naha, and economically promote the south. “ He says there will also be flights between Kumejima and the southern Daitou Islands beginning in September.
