Date Posted: 2002-08-08

A man appeared in a post office in Naha City near Naha Police Station, showed a knife and told the female clerk to hand over money. He also declared his ultimate aim. “Give me money. Then I can go to prison.”

A male postal worker approached the man and convinced him that he already had committed a crime that would land him in prison by threatening the clerk. The man then agreed that he did not need the money, and waited for the police to arrive. When questioned, the man said that he had come from Hokkaido and had only nine yen in his pocket. He said that he wanted to go to the prison so that he could eat.

Before entering the post office, he had taken a sight-seeing trip around southern Okinawa in a taxi. He had then asked the driver to take him to a post office, showed a knife and said that he had no money. The driver did as ordered. “He looked quite serious and really scared me, so I dropped him off at the post office, and went to call the police.
