Date Posted: 2007-07-25

Okinawa Prefecture officials are taking rules against drinking and driving seriously, busting two full-time employees caught driving while intoxicated.
The Okinawa Prefecture General Affairs Department suspended the two, who were apprehended in separate incidents. One, a 40-year-old prefecture employee who slammed his car into a highway guardrail July 3rd was suspended without pay for six months. Department Director Shizo Miyagi made the announcement, but refused to identify the employee.
Another drunk driving incident involved a 20-year-old employee who had been drinking with friends June 29th. The man called an “unten daiko” driver service, but took his car and drove after the daiko team failed to show up. The man was stopped at a police checkpoint. Miyagi says the man was suspended for three months.
Miyagi promised “The Prefecture will strive to educate every employee about dangers of drinking and driving, and urge them never to do it, under any circumstances.” The director also apologized to citizens for loss of credibility among his employees.
