Teacher convicted of sex with a minor sues media

Date Posted: 2007-07-12

A 34-year-old junior high school teacher convicted of indecent acts for having sex with one of his students is out of jail and suing both the government and the news media.

The teacher, who was released from prison on grounds of mental illness, is charging both Okinawa Prefecture and four broadcast news companies of defaming his character by publishing his name. His demand in Naha District Court is for the Prefecture to pay ¥44 million in damages, with OTV, QAB, RBC and KHK paying him another ¥44 million.

The man surprised observers at the court when he talked about the junior high school girl he had sex with. “I’m engaged with her,” he told reporters. “When the girl becomes an adult, I’m going to marry her.”
Stunned by the announcement, the media could only say “What?! We’ll object to that. That can’t be the truth.”
