Safety officials ban Cape traffic during typhoons

Date Posted: 2007-07-12

With Typhoon May-Li bearing down on Okinawa this weekend, the 11th Safety Maritime Agency has announced plans to close the Cape Zampa road leading to the ocean.

Citing safety and the number of people injured last year during typhoons and tidal waves, the Maritime Agency says it will close the game with strong iron bars to block vehicles during typhoons. Last year, ten individuals, many of them tourists, were injured at Cape Zampa, where waves are high and the jagged wharfs have sharp rocks.

People flock to the Cape Zampa location during storms to gather along the shoreline, and at the lighthouse area, to watch the waves. Many have died over the years, leading the Maritime Safety Agency to take action. “Please don’t go near the wharf or near the Cape,” one officer said. “It’s really dangerous.”
